Digital tools for tourism during a pandemic

From the point of view of demand, tourism is a global phenomenon: in Switzerland, it represents nearly 3% of GDP and 4.4% of total employment. The pandemic hit the sector very hard with a drop of almost 60% in international arrivals.

The pandemic has acted as a gas pedal for the inevitable digital transformation that the sector must face to optimize local supply and international demand distribution.

This Flagship was designed to proactively address the challenges of digital transformation by giving the travel industry as a whole:

  • Reliable data for empowerment,
  • New business models, processes and experiences,
  • Tools for designing resilient tourism systems,
  • A platform for reflection, valorization and orchestration of ongoing projects and experiences will be provided, promoting the mutual enrichment of communities of practice.

The Icare research institute is involved in sub-projects 1 and 3, for a period of 4 years, during which we will put our know-how into practice, whether in terms of software architecture, inter-system interfaces (API), artificial intelligence, or technology watch. Objective: make tourism information systems more resilient.
